Why Meditate?

Meditation is no longer considered something which is practiced only by Buddhist monks, Christian contemplatives, and Hindu sadhus. It has become a part of our popular culture because it brings positive and often immediate results.

It is recommended by doctors as an effective method for reducing stress and hypertension, for managing physical and emotional pain, and as part of post-surgery rehabilitation. It is being taught to business managers to help them focus effectively on their work and be less anxious about their responsibilities.

Sports coaches recommend meditation to help athletes improve their concentration and to overcome nervousness. School teachers are learning to meditate in order to have more patience with their students, and they are teaching it to their students to help stimulate their creativity and intuition.

Why is meditation so highly recommended?

First of all, because it is easy to practice. It can be done by anyone, virtually anywhere, at any time, and it requires no equipment, instruments, or special clothing. All that is required is a comfortable seat and a quiet environment. Once you are well practiced in meditation, you can do it as well in places which are not perfectly quiet.

Meditation is easy to learn, and it can be practiced in as little as ten minutes a day. It can be conveniently used during daily activities to enhance concentration and focus, and to relax physical and mental tensions.

The practice of meditation also improves health and vitality. It teaches proper breathing techniques, which bring fresh oxygen and vital energy to the body and brain cells, stimulating the organs and strengthening the immune, digestive, and circulatory systems.

For those people who are philosophically inclined, the practice of meditation opens up new avenues of self inquiry that can lead to greater understanding, harmony, and inner peace.

And for those who are spiritually inclined, meditation is the doorway that leads to Self-realization.
