“The [Kriya] technique, which as you see is simple, embodies the art of quickening man’s spiritual evolution. Hindu scriptures teach that the incarnating ego requires a million years to obtain liberation from maya. This natural period is greatly shortened through Kriya Yoga. Just as Jagadis Chandra Bose has demonstrated that plant growth can be accelerated far beyond its normal rate, so man’s psychological development can be also speeded by an inner science. Be faithful in your practice; you will approach the Guru of all gurus.”

Paramhansa Yogananda: Autobiography of a Yogi, 1946 edition

God’s Boatman

I want to ply my boat, many times,
Across the gulf-after-death,
And return to earth’s shores
From my home in heaven.

I want to load my boat
With those waiting, thirsty ones
Who are left behind:
And carry them by the opal pool
Of iridescent joy—

Where my Father distributes
His all-desire-quenching liquid peace.

—Paramhansa Yogananda— Whispers from Eternity, 1930 edition

Paramhansa Yogananda had a world mission: to inspire all souls with love for God and to share the teachings and practices of Kriya yoga. He was sent to the West by Babaji to teach this technique which can bring us the direct inner experience of God’s presence.

During the days leading up to the celebration of Yogananda’s birthday on 5 January, we will share many stories from Yogananda’s life, and from Swami Kriyananda’s life with his Master. There will be opportunities to practice the techniques that Yogananda taught us, such as chanting, affirmations, and healing prayers, and also to ask questions about your practices. We will share the deep blessing of meditating together and drawing the Master's presence into our hearts.

On Friday, 5 January, Yogananda's birthday, there will be a long meditation in the morning, a sumptuous Indian lunch, and a devotional ceremony in the evening.
